Restoration of a set of signed Throne chairs by Carlo Bugatti

Before restoration began, these chairs were soiled. The silk braiding had disappeared and the inlay work was no longer complete.

Work carried out included: the braiding was reconstructed and the inlay work was completed. The wood was gently cleaned and finished with beeswax. The chiselled brass was restored to its former lustre by treating it with microcrystalline wax.

Carlo Bugatti’s Throne Chair is an iconic piece of furniture that reflects the eccentric and artistic style of this Italian designer. Bugatti, who was active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was renowned for his unique and imaginative designs, which blend Art Nouveau, Moorish, Japanese and Gothic influences.

The chair has an architectural appearance, making it more of a work of art than a functional piece of furniture.

The wickerwork and fringes emphasise its decorative and oriental influence.

Hand-painted motifs featuring abstract and floral patterns make each piece unique.

Carlo Bugatti’s designs combine Art Nouveau with influences from Islamic, Japanese and Egyptian art.

The Throne Chair resembles a ceremonial seat, inspired by historical and exotic thrones.

Today, his furniture is regarded as works of art and is collected by museums and private collectors.

Carlo Bugatti’s Throne Chair is a masterpiece of eclectic design and boundless artistic expression. It is a prime example of the way in which he experimented with materials, forms and cultures to create an exotic, almost mystical aura.
